Nigeria – A Challenge in Morality

Posted by & filed under Africa, All Subjects, East Africa, History, International Education, Politics.

For hundreds of years the African region has been exposed to heinous feats of violence, standing atop this bloodied mountain of public rioting, tribal warfare and governmental oppression by both corrupt politics and military regime alike is Nigeria. Even in the last few decades we’ve seen a repeated change of government powers, repeated coup d’états  and assassinations as the country’s ruling powers repeatedly shift.

Today, President Goodluck Jonathan attempts to repair the vast damage that has been done to the country over the era, but luckily enough, the oil revenue and new industry that has followed it has brought forth a distinctive opportunity that could make Nigeria not just any developed nation, but even a world heavyweight. If all cards are played correctly of course, but is it any surprise that today, moral values in the country are still struggling to be established?

Waziri of Fika Emirate in Yobe, Adamu Fika, has said that the restoration of ethical, moral and academic values in Nigeria is critical to the country’s development and survival in the 21st Century. Furthermore, it’s been said that this is the biggest problem facing the country following the decades of political and civil unrest. Stressing the need for the Federal Government to further intensify its efforts to develop the country’s moral standards further, Fika stated that academic institutions must play their part as well and must encourage a high level of multi-cultural acceptance.

Although the main reason for violence in the country has often been due to political motivations, religious and ethnic tensions have always been notably high and this too needs to be seen in another light. Statesman Yusuf Maitama-Sule states than Nigerians must learn to live together and respect each other’s religion, tradition, values and culture in order to foster peaceful and harmonious relationships. He even went as far to state that a large majority of the country’s problems would be solved in their completion should citizens begin working together with a determination of purpose.

As Nigeria toils and turns, it rapidly rises, and schools have begun to be opened across the country, especially so in the last decade as the revenue from the oil has begun to find its way back into the country.
