A School without Walls?

Posted by & filed under Africa, All Subjects, East Africa, International Education.

Kenya has recently seen some drastic changes to society and politics, and with it, it has seen a variety of improvements to many areas of its infrastructure and economy. But apparently its education still has a way to go, despite the donation of a string of Solar-Powered Internet Schools by Samsung.

Meet the school without walls, quite literally. Students work, play and study under trees and most of them sit on the floor due to a lack of desks and the school doesn’t even have access to toilets. This school, Hatata Primary School in Tana River, has taken on an increased number of students, now numbering over a hundred in total, and blames the poor conditions and lack of equipment on the sheer volume of individuals. The school’s teacher, Bachila Ali, said “The big number has overstretched the facilities making it extremely difficult for us to work under such harsh conditions.”
