Oman’s always been one of those unknown countries. Small time, not nearly as much history as its close neighbours in Qatar, Bahrain, and most notably, the United Arab Emirates, and on top of that it hasn’t exactly had a thriving economy, up until now. After the discovery of oil in the region, the country has undergone a massive economic explosion and suddenly after the rise of Sultan Qaboos to the throne, education in turn has seen amazingly huge improvements.
Today the country is slowly weaning itself off of oil and onto more natural energy sources, and at the same time it’s rapidly diversifying its income sources, investing more money into the education sector each year. Today it makes an even bigger announcement, the construction of the country’s first and only Oxford University accredited academic institution, Muscat University.
His Highness Sayyid Taimur bin Asaad al Said is quoted, saying “The government is concentrating on the education sector with special importance and is trying to introduce latest ways of learning.†The university is due to open in 2016 and begin providing its three major disciplines in Logistics, Engineering and Business, which are begun after a foundation term to improve their students’ level of English. Then, the following year it’ll open up a plethora of courses in many other disciplines as well. Best of all, the University of Oxford’s fully-owned company, Isis Innovation Ltd, will be providing consultancy for the university’s technological needs.
The plans for the university include a variety of five-year schemes up until 2040 which are expected to synchronize with all ministries in the country to provide increasingly improved standards of education to its students each yeah. Furthermore the curricula are likely to undergo massive revolutions over time to evolve it further to provide better, more effective and more practical subjects.
